The Hidden Game of How To Get Ahead In Life

By John Suzie Hardy

While some people try so hard to get ahead in life, barely keeping their head above water, others have a secret edge, effortlessly getting whatever they want. At best, these winners are mediocre imbeciles, yet they rise to fame and fortune while the virtuous and talented fall by the wayside.

Could there be a hidden game that circumvents the rules we learned as children?

It's a little like finding yourself alone in the dark. You may be one of many people wandering around aimlessly as thought blind, but if you had night-vision and could see what others cannot you would be able to remain on step ahead of the game.

If youre one of those whose head is barely above water, I offer you a pair of social-vision goggles, so to speak, a peek at The Real Secret.

The fact is that the whole thing is no more than a game - a game in which often the least qualified are the most successful because they, unlike you, have mastered the rules. Most of us will never see this game; most of us will never understand it. But for those who do, the chances of achieving success just got a whole lot better.

Life is too often a suckers game and suckers dont see it because they play by the rules. Suckers believe in fair play; they believe that what goes around comes around. They are the ones who often end up the loser.

So what is the deal with this so-called 'game'? How does it affect our lives? And who are these 'players' - these 'winners' - these undeserving success stories who manipulate the rules to best advantage while we scrimp and save?

Players help themselves to the riches life has to offer - fancy homes, fast cars, beautiful husbands and wives - leaving little but dregs for the rest of us.

Now, if you were to ask a life-skills coach how to turn your lot in life around, he would tell you that the answer lies in setting goals and maintaining a positive attitude while playing to your strengths. I'm not about to deny that there is something in all of this. If we are ever to get ahead in life we will need goals, and until we recognise our own particular strengths we will have no way of knowing where and how we fit into our society. The problem is that the lifestyle coach can only do so much. Even if we achieve something small - a new job, a promotion, a raise - we are still far beneath the level of success which the Players achieve, and the ultimate victory in the Game is still far beyond our reach.

Unless you have a guide to show you how to play the game - a rulebook to alert you to the opportunities - you will simply remain stuck in a rut, unable to break into the prosperous world of the players. Without the 'social-vision goggles' I spoke of, it's very much a matter of luck or fate whether we make any progress at all. We are subject to the will of fortune, with little or no control over our own futures.
