Does Lasik Eye Surgery Work?

By Brian Gordon

The late 90s brought a revolutionary new procedure known as Lasik eye surgery that could improve vision and give people a chance to ditch their glasses and contacts. Patients were anxious to be next in line for the procedure. Those who were stuck with glasses were ready for something like this to come along.

Vision is often restored to 20/20. Some patients may only be restored to 20/40. As a point of reference, in the United States you are legally allowed to drive a vehicle with 20/40 vision as it is not considered to be a significant enough vision impairment to require correction.

Most Lasik eye doctors will thoroughly explain the procedures and the risks that you will be facing. A surgeon with good skills and a strong reputation is pertinent to your results. Your initial eye health is also considered before making the final decision.

You also need to understand what to expect when having Lasik eye surgery done. Despite the fact that it is a simple and routine eye correction that almost always gives you the results you expect, it is still your eyes that you're correcting. Get the facts.

The doctor will use either a small blade or a new laser to make a tiny slit in your eye to gain access to the cornea. This is actually a painless procedure. The cornea is initially slit to make a flap.

Lasik eye surgery is the process of correcting the shape of the cornea in order to improve vision. You might experience perfect vision afterward with minimal discomfort. Very few patients feel more than a mild disturbance during or after the process.

A good Lasik eye center can help you decide on your physician if you don't already have one. Check out your potential Lasik eye doctor's reputation and ask as many questions as you want. Exploring the potential fully is the only way to be sure that you have all the facts before you make your decision.

The laser procedure of today is far better than the original laser used in the early procedures. It is nearly common knowledge for laypeople that those with dry eye must have their dry eye treated well in preparation for the surgery and may not be a successful candidate.

Lasik eye surgery is still surgery. It is better if you can relax at home for a few days. Your vision will improve, but you will need to give it a full 7 to 10 days before doing any physical exercise or lifting heavy object. The blood vessels in the eyes need to remain as calm as possible in order for proper healing to take place.

The procedure itself does not hurt. You are not put under general anesthesia, but you feel nothing with a local. You can not see the cornea being reshaped or any other part of the procedure. You might notice an interesting aroma, which is nothing more than the necessary removal of tissue from the eye.

As you develop clear vision, you will experience a whole new sense of freedom. It's uncomfortable to sack out on the sofa and watch a movie and contacts can be a chronic irritation. The corrective procedure known as Lasik is still the answer to permanent vision correction.
