How to Look After Your Pet Dog

By Martin Davis

Dogs are very different from cats. A dog will need a lot more of your attention, but when treated right they will love you as much as you love them.

Tip 1 " A good way to make sure you dont lose your dog is to place an ID tag on its collar. By doing this, if your dog did get lost they can be found and returned easily.

Tip 2 " There are certain laws that you need to follow in regards to registering your dog. Most pet owners will take their dog to the local vet to get a microchip inserted into the dogs shoulder blade. This would normally cost around $50. The reason why the chip works so well is if the dog is lost and then found then the dog is registered and can be returned.

Tip 3 " Whenever youre taking your dog for a walk, make sure that the dog is on a lead and it obeys you. Some dogs are classed to be dangerous by some authorities and may need to be muzzled when out in public.

Tip 4 " If you tend to leave your dog outside for long periods of time, then it is a good idea to make sure that your garden has adequate shelter to protect the dog from the cold and rain.

Tip 5 - Going to the vet should be a regular thing, animals, like humans need checkups from time to time. It may not be cheap going to the vets, but it is cheaper to have regular checkups than finding out later on that your dog has a serious illness that could have been prevented.

Tip 6 - Unless you are intending to breed from your dog it is important that you have the spayed or neutered. Many dogs after having this routine surgery carried out tend to live much longer and tend to be much healthier and have far less behavioural problems.

Tip 7 " Eating healthy is very important to your dog, so you must get it right. Most people will feed their dog dry dog food this is perfectly fine as it has all the nutritional ingredients needed. Other options include fresh meals - this is great if you have the time. It is always a good idea to speak to your vet about what is best for your dog.

Tip 8 " Your dog will start to respect you a lot more if you were to take them to dog obedience classes. Dogs really enjoy these classes as they will learn a lot about how to behave in and outside of your home. You will also learn a lot about how to look after your dog and after time a mutual respect will build.

Tip 9 - Although you dog may have the garden to run around in, it is worth actually taking them for much longer walks as well. It provides them with the opportunity to explore new areas so not only are they getting the physical exercise they need but the mental as well. Ideally you should be trying to walk your dog at least twice a day. However, this may differ from breed to breed and if you are unsure how much exercise your dog needs then speak to your vet.

Tip 10 " Dogs, like humans need cleaning, so it is a good idea to clean their coat and maybe their teeth. If you are unsure on how to do any of this you can ask your vet or take your dog to a dog grooming centre.

Above we have listed 10 of the most important points that will make sure your dog stays fit and healthy.
