Stress Management Techniques That Completely Work

By Johnny Star

A couple of decades ago, science fiction aficionados and futurists believed too much in the powers of the rapidly advancing technology that they predicted less work for human beings and more machines do our bidding around this time. As you can see in today's world, they were wrong and right at the same time. Wrong, because they made our lives more complicated and hectic while bringing along a good amount of comfort. Wrong, because people are working more hours in this day and age as opposed to the time the futurists made their prediction.

True, because some Americans are now working less hours because they have been laid off by their downsizing companies due to the economic crisis the globe is currently going through. The unemployed faces the pressure of being able to find jobs to feed their families. The employed faces the pressure of handling the added amount of workload that were left behind by the laid off personnel. What does this tell us? Both scenarios equate to one thing: stress. In this day and age, no one is exempted from stress.

Stress has been an ongoing problem of man for a long time. Nowadays, there are a lot of stress management techniques being offered. The goals of these are all the same: stress relief. There are only different methods as to suit different people since each of us have our own reactions to the stress that we face. There are three main categories of stress management techniques. They are as follows:

Stillness: Most tress management techniques involve a certain degree of stillness. The main objective in these techniques is to induce a state of calmness or relaxation. Examples of techniques that involve staying still are meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises. Listening to music is also considered.

Moving: If there are techniques that involve stillness, there will always be techniques that do the opposite. These techniques are a little like distraction. Engaging in sports and hobbies can turn the attention of the stressed person from the stressful situation to something fun. Exercising also helps offset the stress hormones and gives you more energy for handling stressful situations.

Positive Mindset: An endocrinologist proposed that there is good stress and bad stress. Stress becomes good or bad if we react to them in a good way or bad way, respectively. Having the enthusiasm or optimism every time you are faced with stress helps us better deal with stress. When we have a positive mindset, we are less likely to get into our fight or flight mode.

There are a lot of stress management techniques under each of the category mentioned above. We all experience stress every single day. We can't stop it, but we certainly can reduce the effects it brings.
