One of the truths of our being is death. All of us have to face it and is yet not ready for it. Honouring the dead is an age old custom that has gradually changed to suit the times. A traditional funeral service was conducted in church, with some hymns, recitals and a eulogy for the departed. But, as more people people are looking forward to personalized funeral services, the practice has undergone change over the last few decades.

Organising a funeral service, right after the death of a loved one can be quite a disturbing and painful experience. The fundamental misconceptions regarding funeral services include that this is a legal necessity, which it definitely isn't. Secondly, a majority of people have an erroneous belief that a service can be conducted only in a church. It is noteworthy that though traditionally such services were held in a church, with the trend of personalizing, many funeral services are being held within the premises of the deceased. Thirdly, such services do not require the presence of either the pastor or the casket and can be easily held without either.

But, keeping in line with the idea of a personal funeral service, substantial thought must be given to the wishes of the deceased person. The choice of music should be from among the personal options of the deceased, though it is advisable to have soft music. You can either engage a live music band or choose to play music records.

Some families prefer display of the personal things of the dead person in a collage, for the persons assembled to reflect on his or her life. Address is extremely crucial in all funeral services including the personal ones. It could be a recital, a song or a personal speech that aptly describes the dead person.

Last but not the least, it is essential to give some memento to people who gather for the funeral service, so that they can remember the dead person forever.
