Wooden Sheds Categorized A Different Way

By Dan Reynolds

Usually, wooden sheds are categorized by the type of roof they are made with. There's salt box, gambrel, lean-to, etc. But you can also categorized them a different way - by how they are used. Each one of these uses can have any of the types of roofs mentioned as the style doesn't really matter. Here are the five most common uses for wooden sheds:

1. Sheds for Storage

These sheds are the most basic you can get. Most of these sheds don't (or shouldn't) even have a window since they have to be secure enough to keep potential thieves out. They can either have a wooden (skid) floor or a more permanent concrete slab for a foundation. A storage shed should be well organized since space is usually at a premium.

2. Garden Shed

The most convenient item for your garden may be a garden shed (certainly if your garden is a fair distance from your house or garage). If you've ever needed to get to your tools right away and couldn't find the one you were looking for, then you should know how handy a garden shed can be since that is its main purpose. They are also a convenient place to store all your gardening supplies and even a potting bench.

3. Tool Sheds

Is your wife tired of all your important tools piling up in the corner of your garage? A tool shed is one place to hold all your tools and should be secure like a storage shed. Just add a few cabinets, pegboards, shelves, a workbench, etc. You may even hear an end to the complaining, with the exception of, "are you out in the tool shed again?"

4. Converted Sheds

This is my personal favorite. Sheds are so easy to convert from one use to another. A converted shed can be used as a mini retreat if you add a few items like cozy furniture, a nice rug, etc. You could also change it into a pool cabana or an artist studio - the list goes on.

5. Playhouse For The Kids

Playhouses can either be built for this specific purpose or you can convert an existing shed into a playhouse (see paragraph above). And, once the kids have outgrown it, convert it back.

There are several other types of sheds you can categorize by their use but this is a basic overview of the five most common. Hopefully you will see the need to build one of your own. You won't be disappointed.
